Free Use of FindMyPast this Weekend
From 12:00pm on Friday 22 to 12:00pm on Monday 25 January, FindMyPast are offering free access to everything except the electoral rolls and the 1939 Register.

Illustrated Berwick Journal on British Newspaper Archive
The British Newspaper Archive has just announced a new newspaper in their archive.
It's the Illustrated Berwick Journal also known as the Berwick Journal and General Advertiser.
The first issue was published in 1855. The archive's first issue seems to be Saturday 16 June 1855 and their most recent, Friday 29 December 1871.
There's also a special offer:
"For a great Christmas gift idea, we're still offering 20% off our 12 month gift subscription. Just click and use the code VIXEN. Make sure the "It's a gift" box is ticked. Hurry - offer expires on 24th December.", however the newspaper's also available on FindMyPast.

FindMyPast Free Family History Live Broadcast or Webinar on Saturday 8 November
To celebrate Remembrance Weekend, FindMyPast is running a live broadcast or free webinar on Saturday 8 November between 3pm (GMT) and 5.30pm.
The programme includes 6 speakers and covers: getting started, researching your family history, censuses, British newspapers, military records, tracing ancestors from Ireland, international records.

Free Access to FindMyPast This Weekend (7-10 November)

Use the time to explore their collections of UK parish records, historical newspaper pages, military records and passenger lists.
I used FindMyPast to research much of the information about John Hamilton Hall and his family, including census records and military records relating to his service in the East India Company's Bengal Infantry from 1819 to 1838.
You'll need to register and log in.
In some respects, FindMyPast is easier to search than Ancestry so give the FindMyPast Free Weekend a whirl and add a comment below if you find something interesting.

John and Robert Brown, First Settlers of Berwick, Pennsylvania, USA
In my blog, How Berwick, Pennsyslvania, USA, Got its Name, I asked if we can discover the first name and maiden surname of the wife, of John Brown or Robert Brown, as she was said to have come from Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Find A Grave has memorials to John, son of Robert and Mary McIntosh-Barrett; John Brown, born 1760 died 1839, (which lists his wife as Amelia or Susan F.) and Robert Brown, died 1821, which lists his wife as Mary McIntosh-Barrett, died 1838.
On Family Search, I looked for John Brown and Robert Brown with various combinations of their birth, death, and residence but there are too many of them and I found no Mary McIntosh-Barrett, though lots of Mary McIntoshes and Mary Barretts, who died in 1838. There are no McIntosh-Barretts listed in FindMyPast.
