Free Theatre Tickets - Friday 14 August - Maltings Theatre, Berwick-upon-Tweed

I have been working with Wendy Payn and Ross Graham at the Maltings Theatre, Eastern Lane, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1AJ, with a group of children, aged 8 to 12, who are creating a play in a week for Maltings Youth Theatre.

The play is still evolving but it will be based on research and information that the children have found out about the Greenses area of Berwick and fishing.

 Their short play will be performed at 6pm in the Henry Travers Studio at the Maltings on Friday 14 August.

It’s free to attend and will last a maximum of half an hour.

If you are in Berwick, please do come along and support the children who have worked very hard all week on this project.

Berwick-upon-Tweed - A World War I Military Service Tribunal

In this video, Maltings Youth Theatre present a World War I military service tribunal in the setting of Berwick-upon-Tweed jail hearing 2 applications for exemption from conscription into the British Army, based on research by the Berwick 900 Our Families project.

Berwick’s First Mayor’s Parade on Sunday 24 May

The May Fair Street Markets take place on Marygate, right in the centre of Berwick, from today to Monday 25 May from 11am to 4pm each day.

Other events are a talent competition and a ceilidh on Saturday 23 May.
On the Sunday, there’s the first Mayor’s parade with horse-drawn vehicles, pipe bands, vintage vehicles, historically-themed floats and characters representing themes from Berwick’s history and the town’s guild and trades through the ages, Deans of Guilds in their ceremonial robes from Aberdeen, Arbroath, Ayr, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Brechin, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lanark, Perth and Stirling.

It starts in Castlegate at 11.45am at the War Memorial, goes down Castlegate, into Marygate, up Church Street, to the Parade ground.

Also on Sunday there are local bands playing on the Parade in front of the Barracks, pipe bands and Highland dancing, and a church service. More information. .

Discover Berwick’s First World War Story - 25 and 26 April - Event Programme

 

Come to Berwick for this weekend's programme of events commemorating World War I.

As you can see, there are lots of events throughout the day from 11am to 4pm on both Saturday, 25 April and Sunday, 26 April, including living history at the Barracks and the King’s Own Scottish Borderers Regimental Museum, an exhibition, re-enactments, films, talks, dramas performed by Maltings Youth Theatre and Lowick Heritage Group and an opportunity to handle historic objects from the First World War.

Get Your Name Up in Lights

Well, not really. Not up in lights, but on websites and in the newspaper, if that appeals to you.

From April to October 2015, Berwick-upon-Tweed is celebrating 900 years of its history - a long festival of exciting events in Berwick, Tweedmouth and Spittal - more information on the Berwick 900 website.

The Berwick 900 Our Families Project is looking for volunteers (both experienced and beginners) to help them unearth and research the stories of people who have shaped the history of Berwick, Tweedmouth and Spittal and to present them in interesting ways.

You'll get training in family history research skills, working with Berwick Record Office and using local resources, the internet and social media to look at families and people who have not only helped shape the communities of Berwick, Tweedmouth and Spittal but had an impact in the wider world.

Some of the research you do will be presented as exhibition displays, others as plays scripted and performed by the Maltings Youth Theatre, or as articles in local newspapers and on our blog.
